HISTORY
The origins of the foundation of Fuengirola date back to the time of the Phoenician colonization, without ruling out that it was previously a Bástulo settlement. On a hill, on the right bank of the Fuengirola River, stands majestically its old Castle of Punic or Roman invoice and reformed later, in the tenth century by Caliph Abderrajman III.
The Romans call Suel the city, because the star of the same name is clearly visible from its castle.
In the decade of seventh century it was conquered by the Arabs, who call it Sujayl, a denomination that will persist until being reconquered in 1485 by the troops of the Catholic Monarchs. In the seventeenth century the name of Sujayl was changed to that of Fuengirola, due to the Bolicheros of the Genoeses called “gironas” who came to these coasts due to the abundance of fishing.
